Just two weeks ago, it looked all-set for offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil to walk into the 2016 Draft and be taken with the number one overall pick by the Tennessee Titans. But as ever its the QBs that have taken the headlines. The quarterback-needy Los Angeles Rams kicked things off by trading all the way up from number 15 to take the Titans pick which they used to land Jared Goff.Just last week, the Philadelphia Eagles followed suit, moving up to number two from eighth, with the Cleveland Browns making way. Previous No1 QB picks Looking back at previous QBs to go first in the Draft The Eagles had just handed a huge-money deal out to incumbent starting quarterback Sam Bradford. Now, he has demanded an immediate trade from Philly, leaving one thing in no doubt - the Eagles needed a quarterback and they drafted Carson Wentz. Two men initially touted as back-end top ten selections, perhaps even falling into the top 20 took the first and second spotsIn an NFL era starved of genuine franchise quarterbacks, huge salaries have been dished-out to unproven and underperforming quarterbacks, such as Brock Osweiler and the aforementioned Bradford. It is just the sixth time in the Super Bowl era that quarterbacks have gone one and two respectively. Just last year, Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were taken with the opening selections. Sky Sports Digital Mock Draft Casting our verdict from 1-31 Sky Sports takes a closer look at the two players now firmly in the spotlight.Carson Wentz Carson Wentz #11 of the North Dakota State Bison fights to recover a fumble with linebacker Jevohn Miller #55 of Iowa State A vast number of popular NFL draft scouts and analysts appear to believe that Carson Wentz is the best quarterback in this draft class.Renowned NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock recently placed him at the very top of his draft board as the best prospect available, while former NFL coach-turned-analyst Jon Gruden revealed his belief what Wentz is the most NFL-ready quarterback to enter the draft in recent years. One thing for sure is that Wentz has the prototypical size NFL scouts look for in a professional quarterback. He is 66 tall, over 230lbs and the arm-size that gives him all the tools to be a top pro-level player. His frame and athleticism is without a doubt a major strength. It is not a stretch to say that many people a little over a year ago, or even until the draft started to come into focus, did not know who Wentz was.The 23-year old played college football at North Dakota State, a school playing in the FCS - in simpler terms, essentially the second tier of college football. This has been the biggest concern as the draft has grown closer, with question marks around the level competition he faced in college, and his big game experience, so to speak. However, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, a first round pick out of FCS school Delaware in 2008, has gone on to win a Super Bowl. Spences road to redemption Noach Spence talks exclusively to Sky Sports Digital Wentz had his first year as the starting quarterback in 2014, leading North Dakota State to the FCS Championship game, where they defeated Illinois State to win their fourth consecutive title. It was a breakout year for Wentz, who excelled and caught the eye as he threw for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns, as he started in all 16 games. He also proved an efficiency and calmness in pressurised situations.Last season was a little more difficult for him. After an excellent start to the year, Wentz broke his wrist during the week six clash with South Dakota, going on to miss the next eight games.Wentz would return as North Dakota State again reached the FCS Championship game, leading the team to another title with a win over Jacksonville State, also earning his second-consecutive outstanding player award. So, while there may be doubts over the level of competition, what cannot be questioned is Wentzs success in the FCS, where he set the schools single-season records for total yards, completions and touchdowns..In total, Wentz started 27 times for NDSU, throwing for 5,115 yards and 45 touchdowns. There is no doubt he possesses all the physical tools to excel as an NFL quarterback, but the transition to the pro-leagues and the huge step-up in competition is still a big question.Wentzs NFL comparison: Blake Bortles (Jacksonville Jaguars) NFL Draft: Offensive options View from Americas take on those who could take the eye Jared Goff Californias Jared Goff had long been considered the strongest quarterback available in this draft class, until Wentz proved himself a viable contender for that accolade. The 21-year old left California having set the schools records for touchdown passes, passing yards and completions - incidentally, the only Cal quarterback with a more efficient passing career is a certain Aaron Rodgers. And it was not just school records that Goff was setting. In 2015, while leading the team to its first eight-win campaign in six years, Goff was outstanding in setting PAC-12 Conference records for for passing yards and touchdowns in the process. Sky Sports Richard Graves chats to potential first draft pick Jared Goff about the NFL draft and his secret love for Arsenal Standing at 64, Goff also has the desired size for an NFL quarterback, but at 215lbs and smaller hands than Wentz, some questions have been raised surrounding his grip and security of the ball, although it could be argued this was something that was never a concern for him in college.Goff is a player who is calm in the pocket, and despite his smaller hand size, has proven he has a strong arm more than capable of making deep, downfield throws when they are needed. One area where Goff has the beating over Wentz is in his experience and overall productivity. Shaq Lawson exclusive The Clemson prospect talks to Sky Sports Digital While Wentz essentially had only one-and-a-half years as a starter, Goff was the main man during all three of his years at Cal, playing in a highly-competitive conference against the likes of Oregon, Stanford and USC.His numbers put up in college almost double that of Wentz - he threw for 12,195 yards and 96 touchdowns, throwing for over 3,000 yards in every one of his seasons under center.Goffs NFL comparison: Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons) Richard Graves mock draft SSN HQs man in Chicago casts his verdict Also See: Sky Live: NFL Draft Beginners guide to the draft Draft Day memorable moments Richard Graves mock draft Paul Krause Jersey . This fight card, which takes place in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, has had a number of changes, including headliner Lyoto Machida replaced by fellow Brazilian Rafael Natal.BOSTON – Its not yet June and thanks to the advent of the two wild card spots in each league, only two of 30 teams can make the argument to their fans that theyre out of the playoff hunt. With apologies to the Arizona Diamondbacks, a club that made offseason moves with the intention of contending and will now give new hire Tony La Russa time to assess the damage of a disastrous start, the Houston Astros and the Chicago Cubs have dropped far enough in the standings to consider the postseason unachievable. The Cubs have a prized piece at the front of their starting rotation. He is 29-year-old Jeff Samardzija, the ace of a bad baseball team whos expected to top the wish list of teams looking to bolster their pitching staffs ahead of the important games of August and September. Dont let the numbers fool you. Samardzija is good. The Cubs are not good. He is winless in nine starts this season despite posting a big league-best 1.62 ERA. In fact, Samardzijas winless skid stretches to 16 if you go back to last year. Chicago, with its impotent offence, doesnt score him any runs. An even crueler fate: Samardzija pitched seven scoreless innings against the Yankees on Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley Field, departing with a 2-0 lead, only to watch his closer and defence implode in the ninth. The Cubs lost in extra innings. Word around the Blue Jays is if the club is in contention approaching the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, ownership would be willing to loosen the purse strings to acquire additional help. Toronto needs help in its starting rotation with two spots in perpetual question. J.A. Happ is filling one at the moment. Somebody will fill the other come Saturday. Its expected to be Liam Hendriks, a former Minnesota Twin whos off to a strong start at Triple-A Buffalo. Blue Jays catcher Dioner Navarro was a Cub last year and caught Samardzija 10 times. "Hes really good," said Navarro. "I think hes one of those guys the numbers last year didnt show what hes capable of. Hes a horse. He wants the ball. He wants to win. Hes still got that football mentality. Hes that type of player." Samardzija features a sinking fastball, which he pumps up at 91 miles per hour at the low end, 97 at the high end.dddddddddddd Hell spike a splitter; he throws a backdoor slider and a cut fastball. "Hes got everything, man," said Navarro. "Hes got it." Should Samardzija land in the American League East, a real possibility considering the interest hell likely draw not just from the Blue Jays but also the injury-riddled Yankees and maybe others, hell quickly find himself in a home run-friendly division with home run-friendly parks and lineups that stretch deep. Its not the National League Central. Navarro doesnt think he would have a problem adjusting. "I believe so," said Navarro. "I think hes a strikeout pitcher. Hes a swing and miss type of guy. I believe that hes got what it takes. I think the most important thing that hes got is hes a really competitive guy and he wants to win. Obviously hes going to have to make some adjustments coming from the NL Central to the American League East but I think hes going to be a huge asset if we get the opportunity to get him." The Cubs reported asking price for Samardzija in the offseason involved both top pitching prospects Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman. Needless to say that would be a steep price to pay. It may, however, be the going rate. With so many teams jumbled around the .500 mark and no sign of that changing in the foreseeable future, Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer should have a number of intriguing offers to peruse. If Cliff Lees elbow problem is anything serious for the Phillies, another potential chip comes off the market and Samardzijas price goes up further. How about that? The perpetually weak Cubs will be dealing from a position of strength. CHECK OUT THE PODCAST Episode 5 of The Baseball Podcast, #TBP, is available online.
