An eventful night for Boston’s star centre, improved goaltending in Carolina and continued goalie trouble for New Jersey; Fantasy tips and more in Scott Cullen’s Statistically Speaking. HEROES Patrice Bergeron – Boston’s ace two-way pivot had a goal and two assists in Boston’s 4-2 win over New Jersey. It was an eventful night for Bergeron, whose line matched against the Devils’ top unit of Mike Cammalleri, Travis Zajac and Jaromir Jagr, which scored both of New Jersey’s goals. It’s been an interesting start to the season for Bergeron. He continues to be a top-notch possession player (58.2%) and, with six points on a four-game streak, is now scoring points (12 points in 16 games, 0.75 per game) and generating shots (3.06 per game) at similar rates to previous years but, even with David Krejci missing time with injuries, Bergeron is playing just 17:06 per game, his lowest average ice time since his rookie season, 2003-2004. Justin Faulk – The Hurricanes defenceman recorded a goal and two assists in a 4-1 win against Calgary, giving him eight points in the past six games. Oh, and some smart guy said to keep an eye on him. Cam Ward – The Hurricanes goaltender Stopped 22 of 23 Flames shots in a 4-1 win, raising – raising! – his save percentage to .900 for the season. A long way from his best years, Ward has fallen on hard times in recent seasons, his .901 save percentage ranking 36th of 37 goaltenders that have played at least 50 games since the start of the 2012-2013 season. (As Travis Yost points out today, Ward has faced a lot of high-quality shots so far this season.) ZEROES Cory Schneider – Gave up four goals on 23 shots, the third straight start in which he’s surrendered four goals and the adjustment to unquestioned number one goaltender in New Jersey has not been smooth. From 2010-2011 through last season, Schneider had a .928 save percentage, the best in the league among goaltenders with at least 50 games played, so falling to a .901 save percentage through 15 games does suggest that his heavy workload (which includes a league-leading 841 minutes) is requiring some adjustment. Sean Monahan – One shot attempt (missed the net) in 17:59 at Carolina, finishing with 40.6% of the shot attempts (13 for, 19 against) at even strength. While Monahan’s line fared well in their primary matchup (against the line of LW Nathan Gerbe, C Riley Nash and RW Elias Lindholm), earning two-thirds of the shot share, he was buried otherwise, with five for and 15 against (25.0%) in all other matchups. LINEUP NEED TO KNOW Mike Cammalleri – The Devils left winger recorded a pair of assists in his first game in more than two weeks, skating on New Jersey’s top line with C Travis Zajac and RW Jaromir Jagr. Torey Krug – The Boston blueliner returned to action, after missing a couple weeks with a broken finger and played 21:16 for the Bruins, second-highest ice time on the team. SHORT SHIFTS C Travis Zajac had a goal and an assist, snapping an 11-game goalless streak. It was Zajac’s first multi-point game of the season…Bruins RW Reilly Smith put up a goal and an assist for the second straight game…Hurricanes LW Jeff Skinner contributed a goal and an assist, had 11 shot attempts (7 SOG) and was Carolina’s best at driving play (24 shot attempts for, 12 against, 66.7%). After playing a season-low 11:12 against Columbus a week ago, it appears Skinner has escaped the doghouse. FIRSTS Max Reinhart – The 22-year-old centre played 10:52 in Carolina Monday, becoming the third Reinhart brother to lace the skates in an NHL game this year. FANTASY FOCUS A handful of players in action tonight that are worth considering for your lineup: Gabriel Landeskog – The Avalanche captain has one point in the past five games, but is still generating chances, with 19 shots on goal, including a season-high seven last game at Philadelphia. Mats Zuccarello – Now that Derek Stepan is back in the Rangers lineup, Zuccarello has a more stable line and already has five points in the past five games after starting the year with one point in his first seven games. Cam Atkinson – Has one point in the past four games, but 22 shots on goal, including nine against Tampa Bay Saturday. Skating on Ryan Johansen’s wing still means scoring chances and Atkinson is due to bury some. Nail Yakupov – The Oilers winger has only two goals on the season, one in the past 13 games, but he’s consistently generating shots – 28 in the past seven games – so he’s due to find the net soon. Mike Hoffman – It’s a little soon to recommend Hoffman, who is still battling for ice time in Ottawa, but even in limited ice time, he’s the best on the team at getting shots on goal. He has three goals in the past three games and 16 shots on goal in the past four. It was the most lopsided loss in Lakers history. Darren Collison had a team-high 24 points while starting at shooting guard for the injured Jamal Crawford. Chris Paul added 13 points and 11 assists for the Clippers, who apparently are trying to make up for decades of humiliation at the hands of the Lakers all in one season; theyve won the last two meetings by a combined 84 points. Doug Baldwin Jersey . On paper, it looks a little like Andre the Giant taking on a midget wrestler. It has all the makings of a rout with the Americans adding an eighth win in nine outings of this biennial event. The Yanks have eight players in the top 15 in the world while the Internationals have just one. http://www.officialseattleseahawksfootball.com/authentic-customized-womens . Orlando is to begin play in the MLS for the 2015 season. Kaka, who currently plays with AC Milan, is expected to be loaned out to his home club Sao Paulo for the upcoming season before joining Orlando for next season. J.R. Sweezy Jersey . The 29-year-old Mills started three games for Oakland this season, posting a 1-1 record with a 4.41 earned-run average. He opened the season appearing in 14 games and making 12 starts for the Milwaukee Brewers triple-A affiliate in Nashville, posting a 4-2 record with a 1. Frank Clark Jersey . -- Each time the Utah Jazz threatened Memphis lead, the Grizzlies responded with defensive stops.FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Ed Reed is unsure what his football future holds. The veteran safety would like to keep playing, and for Rex Ryan and the New York Jets. Retirement cant be ruled out, either, but he expects to be in someones secondary next season. "Theres 32 teams, man," Reed said Monday as the players cleared out their lockers. "I know Im going to be ready to play football next year." Reeds first order of business will be to get an MRI on his surgically repaired hip for "total maintenance" and then mull his options. The 35-year-old safety had three interceptions in seven games with the Jets, who signed him after he was cut by the Houston Texans. But Reed, who had off-season hip surgery, appeared to lose a step from being the perennial Pro Bowl playmaker he was in 11 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. "I think I was pretty good for having two hip surgeries," Reed said, "and being able to play in this defence after being on another team, first year through free agency. "I have no regrets." Reed and Ryan are close from their days together in Baltimore, but its uncertain if the Jets would be open to bringing him back next season unless its at a veterans minimum salary. Both Ryan and defensive co-ordinator raved about Reeds influence on the teams young defensive backs. Reed wouldnt rule out coming back, saying his familiarity with the defence would be a major consideration. "If the team will allow me," Reed said. "And if everything goes according to my off-season, yeaah.dddddddddddd" Reed, who has 65 career interceptions, had surgery on his hip in April and acknowledged that a full off-season and being healthy would help him going into next season. But he also bristled at a reporters question as to whether people in New York had seen the "real" Reed. "The real Ed Reed?" he asked. "Im in my 12th year. I know how to play this game. Ive played this game a certain way for a long time. The real Ed Reed was here. My expectations for myself are higher than you all could ever be. "The standard has been set high, but like Ive said, I set that standard." While hed still like to play, the safety said he came close to retiring three or four years ago. "So, theres always that possibility," Reed said. "Thats something Ive always evaluated after every season since my first year. Its a violent sport. The sport is changing a lot and organizations are changing. Its just a different game." ---- NOTES: K Nick Folk, set to become a free agent, would like to return on a multiyear deal after going 33 of 36 on field-goal attempts. "I think Ive done my part," he said. ... WR Stephen Hill said no off-season surgery is planned on his ailing left knee that landed him on injured reserve for the last three games of the season. ... DT Sheldon Richardson, the No. 13 overall pick, predicted a few accolades will be heading his way. "I am the defensive rookie of the year," Richardson said. "I dont have odds. Thats just how I feel."
