nger pitchers.WASHINGTON -- With Rudy Gay gone via trade, the Toronto Raptors know they need a true team effort to keep winning game
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For Tiger Woods, there was a familiar complaint. Yes, his back was hurting again. His performance at the PGA Championship is becoming more the norm, as well. Once the games most dominant player, Woods looked old and tired at Valhalla. He was surely overmatched Friday, shooting his second straight 3-over 74 to miss the cut at one of golfs biggest events for only the fourth time in his professional career. Not that this was a big surprise. Woods was playing in only his fourth tournament since back surgery in late March, and he hasnt been a factor in any of them. He failed to make the cut at the Quicken Loans National. He had his worst 72-hole showing in a major at the British Open. He had to withdraw on the final day of the World Golf Championship at Firestone after taking an awkward swing and hurting his back again. He showed up Wednesday at Valhalla, proclaimed himself fit — and flopped again. "I tried as hard as I could. Thats about all Ive got," Woods said. "Unfortunately, I just didnt play well. Consequently, a pair of 74s is not very good." With the cut at 1 over, Woods wasnt even close to playing on the weekend. He was effectively done after shooting a 4-over 39 on the front nine, including a double bogey at No. 6 — where he three-putted from 18 feet — and a really ugly bogey at the par-5 seventh. He drove into a muddy bog far left of the fairway and had to punch out. He sailed his third shot over the green, and a sloppy chip came up short. Woods played better on the back side — a couple of birdies, a single bogey — but he was all done at that point. He said his chances effectively ended when the same problem that left him barely able to bend over at Firestone cropped up again on the driving range at Valhalla. "I was sore," Woods said. "There was no doubt I was sore. It went out on me on me on the range. I just had to play through it." There were no obvious indications of pain on the course, certainly nothing like his tortured departure from last weeks tournament. He appeared to reach for his back a little after the errant tee shot on No. 7, but didnt actually touch it. There were plenty of grimaces, but those usually came after he hit another poor shot. Woods insisted he had the "same feeling, same pain, same spasms" that forced him to drop out at Firestone, though he was encouraged that it wasnt in the same spot as his back surgery. "It was telling me on the range that it probably wasnt a good idea (to play)," he said, referring to his back. "I couldnt make a back swing. I cant get the club back. Im coming through fine. I just cant get the club back. That throws everything off. I cant get anywhere near the positions Im accustomed to getting to. I just cant do it. I have to rely on my timing and my hands, and hope I time it just right." Hell not have plenty of time to work on his game and build up his strength. If he doesnt play next week at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, — and he never has — his season is over. Woods needed to win the PGA to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs. It also seems highly unlikely that Woods will be one of the wild-card picks by U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson, who said over and over that he wanted to see some sign the 14-time major champion was rounding into form. Instead, Woods cant even beat the 64-year-old captain, finishing behind him at the British Open and three shots worse at the PGA. "I dont know," Woods said, when asked about his chances of being chosen by Watson. "He hasnt called." Might be best if he sits out this Ryder Cup. Woods conceded he needs to get stronger and more fit to have any chance of being close to the player he once was. "I felt like I wasnt that far away when I came back at the Quicken Loans," Woods said. "But obviously, the more I play, I cant develop my strength while playing a lot. I need to get back in the gym and get stronger." ___ Follow Paul Newberry on Twitter at www.twitter.com/pnewberry1963Jacksonville Jaguars Jerseys China . Compiling a season-high 29 assists -- led by Kyle Lowrys 11 -- and getting 17 or more points apiece from four players -- led by DeMar DeRozans 20 -- the Atlantic Division-leading Raptors won for the fifth time in a row Friday night, beating the Washington Wizards 101-88. "They are trusting each other," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said. "Nobody has an ego, thinking they should get X number of shots. When one guy is down, the next guy picks him up. Everybody is cheering for each other." Patrick Patterson scored Torontos last 11 points of the third quarter, when the Raptors outscored the Wizards 36-16 to blow open a game that was tied with less than a minute left in the first half. Patterson finished with 18 points. The Raptors have won nine of 11 games since Dec. 13, when most of the players acquired from the Kings in the deal that shipped Gay to Sacramento made their debuts with Toronto. That group includes Patterson, along with Greivis Vasquez, John Salmons and Chuck Hayes. "We got workers," Lowry said after outplaying Wizards point guard John Wall, who had 11 points and six assists, zero in the second half. "We are very unselfish." Across the way, Wizards coach Randy Wittman sounded quite the opposite note, saying he was "shocked" and "very disappointed" by how his team played on a night it drew boos from the home fans. "We had creep in, for the first time in a long time, more selfish play than weve had. We cant play that way. Weve proven over the last couple years we cant play that way," Wittman said. "Getting concerned with, Why am I coming out? How many minutes am I getting? How many shots am I getting? Rather than: What is the team doing? ... Were not good enough to do it that way." Asked whether he figures his players will learn from the loss, Wittman mmade reference to the cold snap that hit the East Coast and replied: "I hope its a smack in the face.dddddddddddd I hope its 20 degrees below zero and they get smacked in the face outside with that, too. Maybe thatll wake them up, too." Wall scored a season-high 37 in a loss at Toronto on Nov. 22, but on Friday had his streak of scoring at least 20 points end after eight games. He disagreed with Wittmans assessment. "I dont see that at all. I think were playing the right way. Were playing as a team. You cant say that," Wall said. "We tried to move the ball, we tried to do the right thing, but shots werent falling," Wall added, then credited Torontos defensive play, adding: "We didnt have enough space tonight. You couldnt penetrate if you wanted to. You couldnt get open shots." Washington came in on a five-game winning streak against Eastern Conference opponents but had all sorts of problems on offence against Toronto and wound up making only 41.5 per cent of its field-goal attempts -- a hard-to-believe 18.8 per cent in the third quarter. "At times, it looked like we didnt want to play," forward Trevor Booker said. "Its pretty embarrassing, especially when they started booing us." Next for the Raptors come games against the elite of the East: at Miami on Sunday, and at Indiana on Tuesday. "You can tell that we just go out there and have fun and play with one another," DeRozan said. "We dont care who scores the ball." Notes: Wizards F Trevor Ariza was ejected with 6:08 left in the third quarter after complaining about a charging call. ... Toronto F Tyler Hansbrough sat out the game with a sprained left ankle. The team said he aggravated it during the teams win against Indiana on Wednesday. ... The Raptors sent rookie G Dwight Buycks to the NBA D-League. He appeared in only 12 of Torontos first 30 games this season, averaging 3.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.8 assists in 10.1 minutes.
