NEW YORK -- A gift from Grady Sizemore gave the Mets the boost they needed to reward Jacob deGrom with a win. The rookie pitched seven crisp innings and New York scored the tiebreaking runs when Sizemore dropped an easy pop fly, handing the Mets a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. "Right now thats the kind of break that we need until we get it going offensively," Eric Campbell said. Campbell stole home on a double steal, and Travis dArnaud hit an RBI single to help the Mets stay out of the NL East cellar with their 12th victory in 17 games against the Phillies this year. Cody Asche had a run-scoring single for Philadelphia, which had won four straight and six of seven. A victory in the series opener would have pushed the last-place Phillies past New York, but Sizemores two-out error with the bases loaded in the seventh cost them. "Routine play, had it the whole way, saw it fine, was under it, just missed it," the left fielder said. "It does not get much worse than that. The guys played hard -- I just happen to be the guy who let the team down. Really all there is to it." In a matchup of rookie right-handers, deGrom (7-6) allowed four hits and an unearned run. He struck out five and walked two, throwing 70 of 103 pitches for strikes in his second start since coming off the disabled list. Mets second baseman Dilson Herrera went 0 for 3 with an error in his major league debut. The 20-year-old Herrera was called up from Double-A Binghamton to fill in for injured Daniel Murphy. David Buchanan tossed six innings for the Phillies, giving up one run and four hits before he was pulled for a pinch hitter after only 64 pitches. New York took a 4-1 lead in the seventh, scoring three unearned runs without a hit. Matt den Dekker drew a one-out walk from Jake Diekman (3-4), who hit Wilmer Flores with a pitch and walked pinch-hitter Campbell with two outs. Juan Lagares lofted a high pop to shallow left-centre, and Sizemore was under it when the ball deflected off his glove for an error that allowed two runs to score. Sizemore won Gold Gloves with Cleveland in 2007 and 2008. "Yeah, we were pretty pumped up in the dugout. There was no question, because we havent been scoring. You take every gift you can get right now," Mets manager Terry Collins said. With runners at the corners, Lagares stole second and Campbell broke for home, beating the return throw from shortstop Jimmy Rollins with a headfirst dive at the plate. "We had to look at the guy at third there," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. Campbell became the first Mets player to steal home since Jason Pridie in Houston on May 15, 2011, the team said. "We just thought wed take a shot at it, and it paid off," Collins said. Jeurys Familia worked a scoreless eighth, and Jenrry Mejia struck out three in the ninth for his 20th save in 23 attempts. Philadelphia tied it in the seventh on Asches run-scoring single after a throwing error by first baseman Lucas Duda. Carlos Ruiz popped up a bunt for the first out of the inning, and deGrom limited the damage when he started an inning-ending double play with an athletic stab of a sharp comebacker by pinch-hitter Domonic Brown. "It was hit pretty good. I just reacted to it and stuck my glove out there and it went in," deGrom said. THANK YOU VERY MUCH The last time the Mets scored three runs or more in an inning without a hit was against the Chicago Cubs at Shea Stadium on July 25, 1999. Philadelphia had not permitted such an inning since Sept. 6, 1996, against the Cubs at Veterans Stadium. HOME SWEET HOME By winning his fourth straight start at Citi Field, deGrom improved to 7-2 with a 2.12 ERA in his last 11 overall. He has gone at least seven innings in each of his past four outings at home, yielding a total of three earned runs. TRAINERS ROOM Phillies: Sandberg said the team might bring up about five or six players from the minors when rosters expand in September. He thinks extra arms would help his bullpen, which had a 1.81 ERA in the previous 21 games since Aug. 5. Mets: Murphy (strained right calf) could be sidelined longer than two weeks. The first-time All-Star was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday night, retroactive to Aug. 25. UP NEXT In the middle game of the series Saturday night, Mets RHP Bartolo Colon (12-10, 3.82 ERA) makes his first start since attending his mothers funeral in the Dominican Republic. His opponent on the mound will be journeyman right-hander Jerome Williams, who is 2-0 with a 1.77 ERA in three starts for Philadelphia. Trevor Daniel Jersey . CHAUNCEY BILLUPS (Pistons): Yes they got Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings in the off-season and Andre Drummond is a beast (teams are kicking themselves for passing on him - he rebounds and block shots every game - thats two more discernable and significant skills than most guys in his draft class), but dont for a second discount the impact of having a savvy veteran like Billups on your team. Shane Lechler Jersey . -- The anointed starting quarterback for the Oakland Raiders is strengthening his hold on the position this training camp instead of losing it.DENVER -- LeBron James returned from a groin injury to score 26 points on his birthday, and the Miami Heat beat the skidding Denver Nuggets 97-94 Monday night despite losing Dwyane Wade and Norris Cole during the game. James, who turned 29 on Monday, injured his groin Friday during the Heats overtime loss at Sacramento. He sat out the following game, a 108-107 win Saturday in Portland, before coming back to help send the Nuggets to their seventh consecutive loss. Chris Bosh had 17 points and Ray Allen 13, including six in the final 5:08, as Miami won for the ninth time in 11 games. Ty Lawson had 26 points to lead the Nuggets, who lost their second straight to Miami at the Pepsi Center after winning the previous 10 in a row. While the Heat got James back, they were without Wade and Cole for much of the game. Cole left midway through the third quarter after taking a fall at the end of a driving layup attempt and hitting his face on the floor. He had come into the game in place of Wade, who didnt return after halftime because of back spasms, the Heat said on Twitter. Cole went up for a shot against Lawson, who was called for a foul, and fell awkwardly face first to the floor. Cole remained down for several minutes while being tended to by trainers before being helped to his feet and assisted off the floor to the locker room for treatment. Joel Anthony came in for Cole and made both free throws. Trailing by nine at the break, the Heat opened the third quarter with a 13-0 run, regaining the lead on a 3-pointer by James. Denver fought back to take a 77-22 lead into the fourth quarter, getting successive baskets from Randy Foye and a dunk froom Timofey Mozgov to help offset another 3 by James.dddddddddddd. The teams alternated scores for most of the fourth quarter, with neither letting the other pull away. After Lawson hit a 3 to put Denver up 90-89, James and Allen converted jumpers on consecutive possessions for a 93-90 Miami lead with 1:36 remaining. Wilson Chandlers two-handed dunk got Denver within a point with 50.7 seconds left but Miami answered with a 3-pointer by Michael Beasley off a feed from James. Foyes layup with 25.1 seconds remaining pulled the Nuggets to 96-94. Allen was fouled with 15.4 seconds left and made one of two free throws. Lawsons off-balance 3-point try hit off the rim and the rebound went out of bounds off Miami, giving Denver one last chance with 1.8 seconds left. With Udonis Haslem in his face, though, J.J. Hickson didnt get the inbounds pass off within 5 seconds, turning the ball back over to Miami, which ran out the final moments. Darrell Arthur hit a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left in the second quarter, giving the Nuggets a 55-46 lead at halftime. Miami, which led by as many as eight points early on, had a 6-0 burst capped by Beasleys running bank shot to get to 46-43 with 2:19 left in the second. The Nuggets closed out the period by scoring nine of the next 12 points, starting with successive dunks from Kenneth Faried and Chandler. NOTES: The Heats Chris Andersen, a former Nugget, missed his third consecutive game because of a sore back. ... James has scored in double figures in 525 consecutive games, the fifth-longest streak in NBA history. ... Chandler has scored 10 or more points in 11 straight games and 19 of his last 21.
