Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of rookie right-handed pitcher Alex De La Cruz to a contract for the 2014 season. De La Cruz, 22, has played last two seasons in the Texas Rangers organization after being signed as a free agent. The product of Puerto Rico went 2-0 with a 0.46 ERA in 10 appearances out of the bullpen for Class A Short Season Spokane of the Northwest League last summer. He also had one save and a 5.0 strikeout-to-walk ratio, as he fanned 20 batters and walked just four in 19 2/3 innings. “Hes a young power arm,” Forney said. “His velocity is anywhere from 91-93 miles per hour and has occasionally been seen at up to 95 miles per hour. With that velocity and a good breaking ball, he has the ability to have some big time success in our league.” In his first season in professional baseball, De La Cruz was the closer for the Rangers Dominican League squad. He made 18 appearances out of the bullpen, going 4-2 with a 1.93 ERA and nine saves. He also had an astounding 14.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The Goldeyes now have 21 players signed for the 2014 season, including 10 pitchers and 11 position players. Lorenzo Carter Jersey . Theyre hoping to use that offensive output as momentum when they meet Russia on Friday at the Bell Centre. Were just going to stick to what we did (versus Canada), American forward Alex Tuch said after the loss. Well look at some video and build off that.We just have to build off this game and take it as a positive. Were going to build off those last couple of minutes and take it to (Russia) in the quarter-finals.Russia took the third seed in Group B after a 4-1 loss to the Czech Republic on Wednesday. The Americans finished second in Group A behind Canada.Down 3-1 late in the third period against the Canadians, the U.S. hit the accelerator. With less than three minutes to go, winger Sonny Milano pounced on an errant pass by Canadian defenceman Dillon Heatherington and fed linemate Hudson Fasching with a behind-the-back pass.Fasching moved towards the goal and found Dylan Larkin alone at the side of the net, cutting the deficit to one with 2:34 remaining. With American goaltender Thatcher Demko on the bench for the extra attacker, the United States pressed on. With two minutes on the clock, Canadian netminder Eric Comrie made back-to-back saves on slapshots by Jack Eichel and Will Butcher.Perhaps the Americans best chance to tie the game came in the final minute, when Tuch fired a shot from the slot that was blocked and smothered by Canadian defenceman Darnell Nurse. The home team quickly skated down the ice and Sam Reinhart scored an empty-netter.Down 4-2, the Americans werent done. Twelve seconds after Reinhart restored Canadas two-goal lead, Larkin beat Comrie with a wrist shot from the faceoff circle. But that was as close as the Americans would come.Well be better tomorrow, said Demko, who made 40 saves against the Canadians. Just looking at video, theres a lot we can learn from that game.dddddddddddd Hopefully we can make some strides heading into the quarter-finals. It wont be too hard to refocus. We have a job to do.We have to stick to what we weve been doing this tournament. Weve had some good success so far. Nothing drastic needs to change. We just need to keep playing USA hockey.Entering the Canada game, the Americans (2-1-0-1) had outscored their opponents 11-1 overall. After a tight shootout victory against the Finns in the tournament opener, the U.S. wins became more convincing. Consecutive shutouts against the Germans and Slovaks confirmed that the Americans were among the tournament favourites. Now, its that frantic finish in the third period against Canada that the Americans want to carry over into the quarter-final. In one of its worst-ever group-stage showings, Russia (1-1-0-2) limped into the final eight after losing two in a row.Ivan Barbashyov, Pavel Buchnevich and Vyacheslav Leshenko lead Russia with four points each. Leshenko has three goals, two of which came in Russias 3-2 loss to Sweden.Goaltenders Igor Shestyorkin and Ilya Sorokin have split Russias four games — each has a win and a loss. There was no immediate word on who would start against the U.S. American head coach Mark Osiecki wants his players to stick to the game plan that worked well at times against the Canadians. We want to worry about ourselves, he said after the loss. We talked about that in the locker-room immediately after our game. Lets get better, turn the page and worry about ourselves. Look in the mirror and find a way to get better. The U.S. will hope for continued productivity from Larkin and Milano, who were key late in the Canada game. They lead the Americans with seven points apiece and Larkin also leads all tournament players with five goals on 17 shots.Weve been very impressed with this group, said Osiecki. We show them on film one thing, and they pick it up like that. You really have to tip your hat to the kids in that locker-room.
