Winnipeg Jets 5 Florida Panthers 2 – With the win the Jets snap a six game home winless streak and climb back to .500 at home and .500 overall (16-16-5). The win also snapped Floridas winning streak at five games. Jets are 10-4-1 vs. Eastern Conference teams this season. Shawn Matthias opened the scoring off a Jets turnover, despite the Jets getting off to a great start. The Panthers first shot on goal did not come until the sixth minute of the game. Jacob Trouba had an attempted pass go off defenceman Tom Gilbert and in to tie the game at 11:06. It was Troubas second of the season. Mark Scheifele and Evander Kane picked up assists. The Panthers then ran into penalty trouble putting the Jets on a five-on-three for over a minute and a half. Toby Enstrom, with his third of the year gave the Jets the lead with assists from Olli Jokinen and Dustin Byfuglien. The Jets are now four for six this season when holding a two-man advantage. 33 seconds after the Enstrom power play marker, the Jets power play clicked again, with Blake Wheeler deflecting a Zach Bogosian shot for his 12th of the year and fifth on the power play. Trouba also had an assist giving him two points in the period. The Jets power play has now scored seven goals in the last six games, going seven for 23, including two for four in this game, the fourth time this season the Jets have scored two power play goals in a game. It was a chippy first period with the Jets outshooting the Panthers 13-9. Evander Kane with his ninth made it a 4-1 game early in the second, converting a pass from Michael Frolik. Scheifele picked up his second assist of the night, giving him back to back multiple point games. Nick Bjugstad scored the Panthers second unassisted goal of the night, again off a Jets giveaway, to make it 4-2, but Frolik restored the three goal lead at 17:53. It was his ninth of the year with assists going to Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien. Despite some late period pressure by Florida, thats the way the second ended. Ondrej Pavelec was at his best late, in the second as he faced five shots in the final couple of minutes. Pavelec picked up his first win in his last six starts. Shots in the second were 9-5 Jets. No scoring in the third with the Jets outshooting the Panthers 10-9 for a 32-23 final. Jets have now out shot their opponent in seven of their last eight games. Of note in the third was an altercation between Kane and Scottie Upshall, as the two were at each other most of the night, starting in the first period when they went off together. Kane picked up the extra as the Jets went a perfect four for four on the PK. Trouba, Kane, Byfuglien, Scheifele, and Frolik all had two point nights. Scheifele extended his point streak to five games (3-4-7), and now has 12 points in his last 13 games. Since November 23rd, Scheifele is the leagues top rookie point getter. Frolik has 11 points in his last 14 games, while Kane has gone 2-2-4 in three games since missing six games because of injury. Wheeler has now scored seven goals in the last nine games, Byfuglien has four assists in the last four games and leads the team in assists with 20. For only the second time this season Bryan Little has gone back to back games without a point. Little was 68% in the face off department winning 15 of 22. Jets picked up six points from defencemen in the win and six points from the Scheifele line with Kane and Frolik. Byfuglien has 13 power play points on the Jets 18 power play goals. Bogosian, back after missing 15 games due to injury, played 17:44, had one assist and was a plus one. He leads the team in plus-minus at plus nine. Wheeler led the way in shots with six, Kane in hits with six, Byfuglien in ice time with 25:34. Ladd has a five game point streak vs. Florida (3-4-7). It was the Jets final home game before the Christmas break, with two more road games to be played. Jets are in Vancouver Sunday (7 pm central time), and in Edmonton Monday (8:30 central time) both games TSN Jets and TSN 1290. Next home game is the 27th against Minnesota. "Its good to win at home," stated Coach Claude Noel. "Its been a while. We came out hard. Wanted to take advantage of their travel and the fact it was back to back games for them. Lots of emotion in the first period. The second lulled, and the third period was one of our better third periods. We played the right way, supported the puck." As for the first period power play goals, "You want results off a five on three. Tough when you dont score. It worked out good for us. Really helped us out getting two. We had a good offensive night from a lot of guys and had a pretty good night from every player." On two point nights for Scheifele and Trouba, "our young guys are good players. Theyve proven that. Mark has grown the way we thought he would grow. Proves there is a process, and it works. It takes time. Hes playing the way we and he thought he would." Not dressed for the Jets were Paul Postma, Keaton Ellerby, Anthony Peluso (game three of his three game suspension), Matt Halischuk, Jim Slater and Grant Clitsome. Gilbert Perreault Jersey . Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, Fiorentina levelled on aggregate in the 14th minute when Joaquin Sanchez Rodriguez headed back a long ball from David Pizarro and Pasqual smashed home an angled volley. The Formations Knowing he would be facing one of the premier teams in MLS, Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson elected to revert back to his 4-2-3-1 formation for their away match with Real Salt Lake. Jonny Leveron replaced skipper Jay Demerit in defence, while Kekuta Manneh replaced Pedro Morales; both Demerit and Morales were rested for the match, and stayed behind in Vancouver. Real Salt Lake head coach Jeff Cassar made one change to the team that defeated the Portland Timbers 1-0 the week previous. Joao Plata replaced Olmes Garcia up front, where the diminutive Ecuadorian partnered RSLs top goalscorer, Alvaro Saborio. The Game To suggest the Whitecaps were flat in the opening 45 minutes would be an understatement – they were very poor. They did not make effective use of the space that was available to them (which was in wide areas) and they were half a step slow and half a step late defensively. The result was that the Whitecaps trailed 2-0 after just nine minutes, with RSL getting goals from both Plata and Saborio. RSL very nearly went in at the break up 3-0, but David Ousted did well to deny Plata a second goal just before the halftime whistle. The opening half was a perfect exhibit of the challenge faced when fielding a very young lineup - those players dont yet have the experience to figure out how to fix things when they go wrong on the pitch. Of the six attacking players who started the match, only Kenny Miller (34) can be classified as an experienced player. Matias Laba (22), Gershon Koffie (22), Russell Teibert (21), Kekuta Manneh (19) and Darren Mattocks (23) are young, talented professionals – but when things go wrong, they cannot rely on previous experience to help them turn things around. In the first half, the movement of RSLs midfield caused problems for the Whitecaps. Despite having a numerical advantage, Vancouver struggled to put pressure on the ball. When the Whitecaps did manage to regain possession, they were too often wasteful, giving the ball straight back to RSL, as Teibert did on the opening goal. Offensively, they were never able to use their speed in transition to maximum effect. In Darren Mattocks and Kekuta Manneh, Vancouver had the two quickest players on the pitch. However, neither player was able to use that speed to their advantage, as Vancouver never found their passing rhythm. Both fullbacks, Jordan Harvey and Steven Beitashour, were cautious in their approach when Vancouver had the ball. This was entirely understandable, given Real Salt Lakes formidable home record and their early 2-0 lead. The result was that far too often Vancouver failed to use the only space that RSL conceded to them, which was out wide. This played into RSLs hands perfectly, as their two wide midfielders, Ned Grabavoy and Jake Mulholland, simply dropped slightly deeper to sit alongside Kyle Beckerman when Vancouver tried to build in midfield. The RSL defenders, who compressed the space between lines, supported this tight midfield unit. This meant that there was very little space in which Vancouver could play. Real Salt Lake controlled virtually the entire first half. Robinson and his coaching staff showed their worth once they could sit the players down at the break. There, the coaches were able to correct the mistakes that were being made and give their young players renewed belief in their abilities. The result was a completely different performance from Vancouver in the second half. The Whitecaps aggressively closed space in midfield, pressured the RSL defenders and midfielders into conceding possession, and denied both Plata and Saborio a sight at goal. While Saborio struck the bar with a header in the 80th minute after a quickly taken free kick, the home side appeared content to defend their HAMILTON - The Abbotsford Heat twice battled back from a goal behind on Sunday, before finally edging ahead in the shootout. Markus Granlund scored the shootout winner as the Heat defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 3-2 in the American Hockey League. "It was tough on us, losing the last few games, and with this being our last game before Christmas we will definitely take the win," said Granlund. Dean Arsene and Ben Hanowski had goals for the Heat (21-9-2), while Joni Ortio stopped 32 shots. The win ended a three-game losing streak for Abbotsford. Joonas Nattinen had a goal and an assist, and Joel Chouinard also scored for the Bulldogs (12-14-4). Dustin Tokarski made 39 saves. Hamilton has now lost five consecutive games. "We have to bring those points home," said Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre. "Its disappointing. "Abbotsford is a good team, and theyre not in first place in our conference for nothing. Theyre a team that battles and competes." Granlund scored on Abbotsfords second attempt of the shootout, while Corban Knight added a goal on the fourth attempt. Ortio stopped all four Hamilton shots. A penalty to Hamiltons Mike Blunden just 49 seconds into the first period put the Bulldogs on their heels, and the hosts struggled to exit their defensive zone early in the period. It took Hamilton nearly seven minutes to register its first shot, but the Bulldogs began to manufacture offensive pressure with the trio of Nattinen, Justin Courtnall and Stefan Fournier establishing a cycle midway through the period. The Heat forced several tough saves from Bulldogs goaltender Tokarski, with the sharpest of those coming with four and a half minutes to play in the period. Abbotsford broke into the offensive zone through the right wing, and Tokarski denied a low slap shot intended for his far post and smothered the loose puck. The goaltender turned aside all 13 shots he faced in the first period, while his counterpart Ortio successfully stopped nine. Hamilton capitalized on offensive pressure in the aftermath of a power play to open the scoring at 4:35 of the second period. Morgan Ellis took a low slap shot from the point that bounced to Fournier in the low slot, and he tipped it ahead to Nattinen. The centre moved to his backhand and slotted the puck past a diving Ortio. As Abbotsford chased an equalizer, it was Blunden who nearly doubled Hamiltons lead a minute and a half later when Martin St. Pierre found him with a cross-ice pass and the winger fired a rising wrist shot that Ortio knocked to the corner with his shoulder. The Heat found the tying goal on a seemingly harmless play, as Arsene took a long-range wrist shot that eluded Tokarski and clipped his far post as it crossed the goal line at 9:56 of the second period. Arsenes goal was his first of the season. Hamilton re-established a lead at 11:18 of the second period, when another defenceman, Chouinard, scored his first goal of the season. Jordan Owens found Nattinen in the high slot with a centring pass, and the forward responded to defensive pressure with a drop pass to Chouinard at the blue-line. The defenceman fired a low slap shot that moved through traffic and beat the screened Ortio. The Heat struck early in the third period to level the game once again, as Hanowski pounced on a rebound to score at 4:47. Tokarski reacted well to stop Josh Jooris initial shot with his left pad, but Hanowski beat the Bulldogs defenders to the rebound and chipped it high and past the downed goaltender. The play was wide open and frantic in the final minutes of the third period as both teams searched for a winning goal. Tokarski made two exceptional saves before the period came to a close, and denied Sven Baertschi from close range without a stick with 23 seconds to play. Lefebvre was not content with his teams loose play in the period that repeatedly forced Tokarski into action. "Thats not the style that we want to play," he said. "We got stuck in our own zone on a few long shifts, and (Abbotsford) got a few good scoring chances. Thats where Tokarski had to be good, and he gave us a chance to win the game tonight." Abbotsford enjoyed a minute and a half of 4-on-3 power-play time to open the overtime period, but could not find a way past Tokarski. Custom Ottawa Senators Jerseys . Vancouver showed better control of the ball and much better use of space in wide areas in the second half.dddddddddddd. There was a confidence in the Whitecaps team that wasnt present in the opening forty-five minutes – a belief that they could not only compete with RSL, but also get something out of the game. Robinson again used his substitutes effectively, bringing Erik Hurtado, Nicolas Mezquida and Sebastian Fernandez into the game. And it was the two Uruguayans – Mezquida and Fernandez – who clawed back a point for Vancouver. Mezquida scored Vancouvers first goal in the 86th minute, knocking home a poor rebound from RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando after great work from Darren Mattocks. Fernandez scored the equalizer deep into stoppage time, ripping a strike from 35 yards past a flat-footed Rimando. The RSL goalkeeper – along with his teammates – will be left to ponder just how they managed to throw away two points after failing to extend their dominant first half performance into the second. The Positives The second half performance from Vancouver was exactly what their fans want to see – positive, confident, attacking play. The pace in Vancouvers team is frightening; Mattocks, Manneh and Hurtado are all likely in the leagues top 10, if not the top 5, in sprint speed. It is really about finding a way for these players to use their assets to maximum effect, which Vancouver did really well in the second half. Good performances from all three substitutes will give Robinson and his coaching staff some decisions to make in choosing their starting lineup for their next match at home on May 3rd against the San Jose Earthquakes (TSN2, 6:30pm ET, 3:30pm PT). It is an enviable problem to have, as every coach much prefers to have too many good players from which to choose than not enough. Real Salt Lake put on the best forty-five minutes of football that I have seen from a team so far this season in the opening half. The concern for Jeff Cassar is finding a way to extend that performance over the course of the game. While they havent found the secret to this yet, RSL is still unbeaten this season. The Negatives Poor performances all around for Vancouver in the opening half, but the silver lining is that this can be used as a teaching moment. With such a young squad of players, the biggest challenge for Robinson is to develop his promising youngsters into seasoned professionals who can solve problems on the pitch, without always requiring the intervention of the coaching staff. This isnt a job that will happen overnight, and the players will now be expected to reflect on what they did differently in the second half that they werent doing in the first. As long as the players are able to learn from their mistakes, the opening forty-five minutes can be looked back on as a valuable lesson. Nick Rimando has been sensational for Real Salt Lake this season, so he can be forgiven for having a 10-minute spell to forget at the end of the game. He should have prevented both of Vancouver goals, and on any other day would likely have done so. The Star Man This was the best performance I have seen from Erik Hurtado. The youngster has incredible speed, but is still learning how to best utilize his prized asset. He made a big impact coming off the bench in last weeks 2-2 come-from-behind draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy, and while he didnt score in that game or against Real Salt Lake, he made a very meaningful contribution on Saturday. His willingness to run in behind stretched the RSL back line and created space for his midfielders to operate, effectively changing the game. He is still very raw and has a great deal of learning to do, so it will be important for him to seek out the coaching staff to carry on that education. But he is certainly showing exciting potential at this moment in time as a second half substitute that can change the game.
